Your rail journeys:
Make your own way to our hotel in Penrith where you’ll meet our tour manager. Enjoy a relaxing evening and dinner served in the hotel’s restaurant.
This morning we drive to Haverthwaite where we board the train for a roundtrip on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Originally named The Furness Railway, it was developed during the 1850’s and 1860’s, and used to transport coal and iron ore at the height of the Industrial Revolution. As the iron industry declined this branch of the line carried day trippers and holiday makers with the turn of the century considered its golden years. The service eventually closed in 1938 and most recently re-opened in 1973.
Today we’ll enjoy a nostalgic steam-hauled journey taking us through the picturesque Leven Valley at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Today’s excursion continues with a visit to Holker Hall and its award-winning gardens. We’ll be met by our guide who will give us a fascinating introduction to historical Holker Hall and the 17,000-acre Estate, which is owned by the Cavendish family. At the end of the tour there is time at leisure for lunch and perhaps to explore the immaculately kept series of formal gardens, which are surrounded by a more informal landscape of trees, shrubs and meadows. This evening dinner is served in the hotel.
