Day 3
A wonderful day awaits, as you journey into nearby Salzburg, the beautiful Sound of Music city and birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Lying huddled beneath the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle, straddling the Salzach River, this Baroque treasure trove will be brought to life through a guided introduction and walking tour, after which you can explore at your own pace. Don’t miss the Castle, which offers predictably wonderful views, nor the exquisite Dom cathedral with its frescoes. Across the river the Schloss Mirabell is a marvellously ornate Baroque palace, from the classical gardens of which Salzburg’s wonderful setting can be appreciated.
Connections with Mozart are everywhere – from the Mozartplatz with its famous Glockenspiel clock, which chimes three times a day, to the composer’s birthplace (Geburthaus) and his family home (Wohnhaus), both of which can be visited during the day (all entrances are payable locally).
Return to the hotel at the end of a marvellous day.
Day 4
This morning brings the opportunity, on an included excursion, to try the hugely enjoyable sport of ‘snowshoeing’. This popular winter activity – as energetic as it is fun – sees you donning the footwear to make fresh tracks through the snow, as you head across the pastures and into the hills, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views.
This afternoon is free for you to rest and relax, while this evening brings opportunities to join a horse-drawn carriage ride and torch-lit walk. Snuggle down beneath your blanket as you head out of the town to the lake, then make the return journey on foot by torch-light, and then enjoy a warming glühwein once you arrive back at the hotel.
Day 5
Spend your last full day soaking up the atmosphere of St Wolfgang, or complete your visit to the Salzkammergut by joining our optional excursionto iconic, much-photographed Hallstatt, in its peerless lakeside setting. Stop first in the celebrated spa town of Bad Ischl, where the historic Café Zauner, patisserie to the Imperial court, is the perfect spot for coffee and cake. From here, you'll continue to Hallstatt to wander through the narrow streets crammed between the lake and the mountains, and take in the famous views from the shore. Why not catch the ferry to the train station for an even better view of the village, or take a cable car to the heights above?
However you choose to spend your day, return to the hotel for a last dinner this evening.
Day 6
Bid farewell to your Austrian hosts, returning to your chosen airport for the flight back to the UK, after a wonderful wintertime adventure.
