Day 3
Early this morning you'll journey south into Botswana for a day in the stunning surroundings of Chobe National Park. This vast area of swamps, floodplains and forests is home to an astonishing array of wildlife and birds, including herds of elephants, hippos and giraffes. Spend the morning game viewing along the Chobe River in the company of a knowledgeable guide, and then enjoy an afternoon overland game drive through the park after lunch at the Chobe Safari Lodge.
Day 4
Today you're free to relax at your hotel and perhaps take part in the wide range of optional activities available. There'll be accompanied tours of the Falls, a fascinating, close-up look at the engineering marvel of the Victoria Falls Bridge that carries the railway across the gorge, and some open-topped bus tours.
This evening, as a perfect end to your day, why not board a riverboat – the African Queen or African Princess – to enjoy an lazy sunset cruise along the languid Zambezi, sipping a cocktail on deck? As the light fades into the African night, the birds come home to roost and the wildlife on the river – perhaps hippos and crocodiles – settles down.
Day 5
Fly south to Cape Town, meet your South African tour manager and make the short transfer into the beautiful, verdant Cape Winelands region, for a two-night stay in a hotel overlooking the Stellenbosch mountains.
Day 6
After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll head to Franschhoek, and the 300-year-old farm at the heart of the Boschendal Wine Estate. Enjoy a cellar visit and wine-tasting and time in the town, where designer elegance mixes with Victorian grandeur in a place first settled in 1688. Browse the array of antiques shops and boutique stores, before you return to Stellenbosch.
Here, a walking tour introduces the history of this delightful town and the array of delicious cuisine for which it is renowned. Enjoy the chance to sample local teas and a snack before returning to your hotel for a second evening.
Day 7
Bidding farewell to the Winelands, today, you'll follow a scenic route east, stopping for wine tasting at the wonderful Van Loveren winery along the way. Your destination will be the wonderful surroundings of the Garden Route Game Lodge, a privately operated game reserve at the gateway to the famous coastal region.
During your stay, in the shadow of the Langeberg mountains, you’ll enjoy safari game drives to see the Big Five (lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards and buffalos), stay in comfortable lodges and enjoy typical African meals looking out over the reserve. Head out on the first of your game drives this evening, then enjoy a sundowner around the authentic Boma (camp fire) before dinner is served.
Day 8
Your second day at the Lodge begins with a pre-breakfast game drive, and includes a visit to its fascinating Reptile Centre, free time to enjoy lunch (payable locally) and a siesta – perhaps by the pool – before a second evening game drive and dinner.
Day 9
This morning you’ll journey along the famously scenic Garden Route to Knysna. Set on the banks of a beautiful lagoon, against a backdrop of wooded hills, Knynsa, is a town of Victorian and Georgian houses that brims with character and style. An included tour here will include a ferry-crossing to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, across the lagoon, which is home to some 200 fish species and a rare species of seahorse. You'll also take a nature drive to Western Head for spectacular views, and enjoy lunch in the shade of milkwood trees.
Later, check in to your hotel, and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 10
Today sees you travel over the scenic Outeniqua Mountain Pass to sun-blessed Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital of the World, in the heart of the Little Karoo plain.
The world’s strangest, largest and often most-valuable bird has been farmed in Oudsthoorn for 130 years, first for its plumage (Edwardian farmers built handsome Feather Palaces with the proceeds) and more recently for its tasty meat – samples of which will be offered at lunchtime.
Moving on, we'll take a scenic drive across the Swartberg Mountain Pass and conclude a memorable day with a typical South African Braai (barbecue) in the mountains.
Day 11
Today begins with a morning visit to the Cango Caves – vast limestone grottoes filled with extraordinary, ancient calcium rock formations. Continuing west, we'll head back towards the sea, pausing to take in the views from Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost point, where there are regular sightings of whales and sharks, including Great Whites. We'll then continue our picturesque journey along the coast to spend a night in the Indian Ocean fishing village of Arniston. Experience an authentic taste of life on the Cape, this evening, as you dine at a fisherman's cottage – a unique experience that is sure to be one of the highlights of the tour.
Day 12
Heading west once more, our journey today takes us to Hermanus, the famed whale-watching centre. You'll have some time to explore this pretty coastal town before we board the coach once more to travel to stunning Cape Town, stopping at Stony Point en route to visit its colony of penguins.
It is difficult to overstate the romance and natural beauty of South Africa’s most-visited city. Few places on Earth can boast such a beautiful setting – nestled on a mountainous peninsula that leads to the Cape of Good Hope, flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and watched over by majestic Table Mountain.
This afternoon, enjoy an guided introduction to the city, which includes a walk through the Company Gardens and an unforgettable ascent of Table Mountain in a rotating cable car that takes in an unforgettable 360° panorama as it climbs to the 1000-metre high summit with its stupendous views of the city and beyond.
Later, after checking in to your hotel, perhaps spend time in the redeveloped Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a complex of shops, theatres, bars and restaurants that has become the city's most popular attraction.
Day 13
On a memorable final full day in South Africa, we'll take a fascinating included tour of the Cape Peninsula. We'll see treacherous Cape Point, where the Atlantic meets the Indian Ocean; the colourful botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch; and Hout Bay, where an optional cruise brings the chance to visit famous Seal Island. Weather permitting, we'll also travel along the breathtakingly beautiful Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the world's most thrilling coastal roads.
You’ll return to the hotel in the late afternoon for a last evening at leisure in Cape Town.
Day 14
After a little more free time today – perhaps for some last-minute shopping along the Waterfront – you'll transfer to the airport to check in for your overnight flight to the UK via Amsterdam or Johannesburg.
Day 15
You'll touch down back home, this morning, at the end of a wonderful African adventure.
