Day 3
Few things are as characteristic of the Greek landscape as the olive tree, which flourishes in abundance in Crete. Astonishingly at least 10 of these date back thousands of years, making them true living monuments – perhaps older than the Parthenon in Athens! This morning we head to the sleepy mountain village of Vouves to see the world’s oldest olive tree, today a protected monument. It’s incredible to think this ancient wonder has outlived empires and still continues to bear fruit.
We continue inland into the rolling foothills of the White Mountains to the Botanical Park of Crete. After a wildfire destroyed the entire area 14 years ago, a local family turned their 50-acre farm into what is now the best botanical park on the island. Spread out along the terraced hillsides, the shady paths meander through more than 150 indigenous and sub-tropical trees, herbs and plants that thrive in the mild Cretan climate.Â
Afterwards we enjoy a tasting of Cretan wines at a local winery before we return to the hotel.
Day 4
Morning
This morning we meet our local guide in the traditional village of Gavalachori. We visit an ancient olive press to learn about the pre-industrial methods of olive oil production. A short walk then takes us to an excellent folklore museum set in an old Venetian house, where our guide will bring to life the many traditional objects on display, from clothing to pottery.
We also enjoy a guided walk from Gavalachori to Douliana, another charming village. During our walk, we’ll take in panoramic views of the countryside and our guide will help us to identify the area’s rich vegetation.Â
Afternoon
In Douliana, we stop at a traditional taverna to enjoy an included light lunch of traditional Cretan food, such as feta-filled filo parcels.
A visit to an olive mill in Melissakis completes today’s itinerary. After a fascinating talk about the modern methods of oil production, we have a chance to taste the factory’s olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Day 5
Departing Chania, we head east to Knossos, the grand and flamboyant capital of Minoan Crete, for a guided visit of this site. Famously unearthed by Sir Arthur Evans, the partly reconstructed remains illustrate the magnificence of Minoan palatial civilisation.
To enhance your understanding of Crete’s rich history, we continue to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum for a guided visit of one of the most important museums in Greece. Housed in a renovated 1930s Bauhaus building, this state-of-the-art museum features the island’s largest collection of Minoan art, as well as artefacts spanning 5,500 years from Neolithic to Roman times.
After our visit, we head south to the charming village of Zaros on the southern slopes of Mount Ida, where we stay at the three-star Hotel Idi for three nights, with breakfast and dinner.Â
Day 6
Morning
Archaeological excavations have brought to light fascinating ancient sites across the island. Today we have a guided tour of Phaistos, one of the most important centres of the Minoan civilisation and the most powerful city in southern Crete. The remains of the palace are remarkably preserved, so it’s easy to imagine the city in its heyday. Situated in a fertile plain, the archaeological site boasts superb views over the mountains and the sweeping bay of Messara.
Afternoon
The afternoon is free, so you may wish to seek out a taverna and sample some of the local specialities – such as sfakianes pites, delicious cheese pies drizzled with Cretan honey – or simply enjoy a cup of tea and watch the world go by.
Day 7
Morning
This morning, we get to truly experience the delightful life of a Cretan farmer at Kamihis Farm, nestled in a green valley and run by a charming family, happy to show visitors ‘the Cretan way’. Try your hand at milking a goat, making cheese and baking a delicious pie with ingredients straight from the farm. Enjoy an included light lunch along with your homemade creations and finish it all off with a taste of the local tipple, raki. The tempting smells of fresh herbs and baking bread, the chorus of farm animals and the lovely views of the surrounding hills create the perfect finale to a memorable tour.
Afternoon
We return to the hotel later for your final afternoon in Crete, which remains free for you to do exactly as you please.
