Arrive at the airport for your flight to Prague. Upon arrival, we transfer by coach to our hotel for three nights, the four-star Hotel Botanique, where your stay includes breakfast. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Relax in your hotel or take the metro to the old town to begin your exploration of this captivating city.
Morning This morning we will have an insightful tour of Prague’s medieval old town. At its heart is a splendid and sweeping town square framed by architectural jewels, such as the Gothic Týn Church, Baroque St Nicholas and Rococo-façaded Kinský Palace. Gaze up in awe at the 14th-century tower of the Old Town Hall, renowned for its incredible astronomical clock, which marks the hour with a miniature parade of the Twelve Apostles. We’ll see the historic synagogues of the old Jewish quarter as well as Wenceslas Square, whose focal point is the handsome statue of the 10th-century duke of Bohemia. Then there’s the much-photographed Charles Bridge, a grand gallery guarded on both sides by 30 Baroque sculptures. The exquisite design is the work of the architect of St Vitus Cathedral, the country’s most important church and an extraordinary example of Gothic architecture. Alternatively, delve into Prague’s dark yet utterly riveting past on our communism-themed tour. Step behind the Iron Curtain for an in-depth look at how people lived under the communist regime, and hear stories about spies, propaganda and executions, from the time of the Cold War until the Velvet Revolution of 1989. We’ll visit important sites, such as Wenceslas Square, stand above the site of a nuclear bunker, as well as memorials to the Velvet Revolution and those who sacrificed themselves in protest of the Soviet Invasion of 1968. We’ll also see Bartolomějská street, where the headquarters of Prague’s Secret Police was located. Afternoon After our tour, the rest of the day is free. Perhaps return to an earlier spot that caught your eye or take a cruise along the Vltava for different views of the city. Take your seat at one of Prague’s many pavement cafés and watch the world go by, or seek out a cosy restaurant to sample the local fare. Try some kulajda, a creamy potato soup flavoured with mushrooms, dill and vinegar; a chlebíčky, an open sandwich featuring a variety of toppings; or a trdelník, a delicious rolled pastry served hot and dusted with sugar, cinnamon or nuts. Even if you’re not a beer connoisseur, a taste of Czech beer is a must – with a long history of brewing and a superb selection on offer, there’s likely something to please most palates.
